Why We Recommend WordPress to Our Clients
It’s free, it’s easy to use, and it’s adaptable. Need we go on?
Okay, so we probably need to say a bit more. But seriously, we really do highly recommend our clients using WordPress — when the CMS is the best fit — for these reasons and more.
To update or build a custom website, there are many costs associated:
- Hosting fees
- Domain purchase
- Internal staff hours
To add another expense for a content management system might be the tipping point that takes a company out of the budget necessary for a website overhaul. It might also be a driving force in companies making compromises on budgets for design, copywriting, or photography, leading to a site that doesn’t quite meet their needs, lacks the proper user experience, is lackluster compared to their competition, or affects their brand cohesiveness or value.
WordPress is a free, open-source CMS with a stellar reputation. It is completely customizable, so there is no need to worry about a site looking like everyone else’s. Then there’s the fact that it has wide support for plug-ins and widgets giving a site even more functionality. Combine that with an easy learning curve for new users, and it’s hard to contemplate looking into purchasing a CMS.
User-Friendly at Any Level
WordPress has quickly become a very common platform, taking over a roughly 58 percent of CMS market share as of late 2015 and powering 1 out of every 4 websites globally (CMS and non-CMS). It did this primarily because of the ease of use for all user levels. The user interface is highly intuitive, making it easy for clients to maintain and update content without needing a lot of specialized training, highly technical staff, dedicated employees, or ongoing third-party assistance.
While working on Park Omaha, a service of Omaha’s Parking Division aimed at making it easy to find and use downtown parking, WordPress provided a manageable platform for any worker in the division to add or modify content. This was high on their wish list. With design, setup, and technical customizations like an immersive map handled by our team, the Park Omaha team was set up for success with the ease and simplicity of use with WordPress. Even better, with WordPress’s easy integration with other software and technology, the Parking Division incorporated use of their GIS mapping system with no problems.
Meets Individual Needs
The platform gives clients a great opportunity for customization while also putting the power in their hands to rapidly implement changes, post updates, or expand. Businesses are constantly changing, and their websites need to change with them. Using WordPress, this ability is in the business’s hands from day one of the site launch. If tomorrow an item went on sale, a client could tag it. If next week they won an award, they could pop up a blog post. If three months from launch their staff expanded to bring on six new people, they could upload a photo and bio quickly.
When Overland, a travel adventure company hosting summer camps for 4th-12th graders, came to us looking for an updated site, it was with the understanding that their offerings were always changing and they needed the flexibility to modify the website internally. Our developers took pleasure in creating a robust back-end for Overland, making absolutely everything — from the navigation to the footers to the forms — editable. The page templates also gave them an easy-to-use structure that didn’t include duplicating pages.
Not Going to Lie, It Makes Things Better for Us Too
From a programming standpoint, WordPress is written using PHP, a highly known programming language with a lot of capabilities. Our team has refined the art of developing on the WordPress platform, allowing faster implementation of the site core and freeing up their time to beef up sites with more advanced and technical code (translation: really cool experiences). What this means to a client is that we spend less time on the standard, required setup and can spend time on the customization and details that set their site apart from the competition.
